Global Warming
Global warming has been the source to many forms of activism. Sparking concern even before the turn of the century, solar and wind power are but two advancements that have grown out concern for human waist. “Global Warming,” an advocacy poster created by Leo Lin in 2009, specifically address rising sea levels, which are related to an increase in carbon dioxide.[1] With temperatures heating up, and northern glaciers melting, low-lying shores and islands may one day be submerged under water as the sea levels rise.[2] A striking illustration of a generalized human being struggles to take in air as they stand in water. Acting as both the individual’s face and an island, Leo plays on the human nature to survive in grave circumstances.
Greenhouse gases are marked as the main cause to global warming. Before 1950 the carbon dioxide level never rose above 300 parts per million. As of 2014, we now are seeing levels of up to 400 parts per million.[3] In the last century alone the global sea level has risen around 6.7 inches, double the rate of what it rose in the past century. This is in part due to the rise in temperatures, which are warming oceans and retreating glaciers.[4] Not only are our oceans threatening our way of life, but record-breaking extreme weather events have become much more common as researched by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). In 2012 there were 3,527 monthly weather records broken for heat, rain and snow in the United states, just about three hundred more a month than in 2011.[5]
By setting limits on global warming pollution and investing in green jobs and clean energy the human race can help slow down these effects. NOAA and Leo Lin’s advocacy poster are both trying to help influence the human race to pay more attention to their waist contribution. The more people understand the effects our actions have on our planets heath, the longer we will be able to enjoy her beauty. Leo emotionally speaks to our fears and feelings while NOAA tries to inform our intellect through facts and figures. By going to their websites, researching the meaning behind posters such as Leo’s, and updating yourself regularly on climate monitoring and research, the closer we all will be to helping our mother, Earth.[6]
