Final Work

Project Statement

Global warming affects every organism on this earth. By using an annotation to support the social poster "Global Warming" by Leo Lin in 2009, I have hoped to support the overall message and give more in-depth information.

Mankind has become numb to the idea of global warming and refuses to accept the pollution we are creating. Due to this lack of concern, I have tried to deepen the audience's understanding of the issue by providing logistics and facts given by nationally recognized organizations, such as NASA.
Do you know why Polar Bears are affected by global warming?
Do you know how much the CO2 levels have risen in the past 100 years?
Do you know how we can help prevent further damage to the earth?
All is explained in my annotations.

Many people may not understand how Global warming is hurting the earth. I have tried to give information that tells the "how" and "why" along with charts and graphs that show a reason (other wise known as logos) as to why people should start acting upon this issue. In my application especially, I have linked elements within it to direct the audience to websites containing articles and statistics about Global Warming. As a means to get in touch with people's emotions (pathos), I decided to almost threaten the idea of extinction within animals and our planets resources. With my t-shirt designs I show animals that are being consumed by pollution and are being harmed by the warming waters in hopes that people will at least feel motivated to help them if not ourselves. By making people become sentimental to the earth's inhabitance, I have hoped to create empathy. If we are not willing to watch out for the earth to save our own well-being, maybe we will at least be concerned for theirs.

The environment in which the poster and annotations will be viewed is a gallery setting. There will be multiple social advocacy posters on the walls surrounding it, and therefore it is vital that the additional annotations are not distracting. The audience will range from designers to environmentalists to passer-bys. Therefore, when designing, it was crucial to take in advice from all ages, genders and job fields.

Understanding that the space may be limited, I then decided to work on a smaller scale so that the annotation did not take away from the actual poster. It is meant to support the work, not steel its thunder. In total, I have three pieces (Application, interactive Ice Berg, T-Shirts) that come together to provide more information than what is given by the poster.  I have decided to stick with the same color scheme, that is blue and white, and have incorporated vector drawings similar to that of which is used in the actual poster.

My Final Designs

Following are my final deliverables for the project as well as a Mock-up as to what it would all look like together in the gallery.

Overall, I am excited as to how this project turned out. I would love to pursue this even further to create more of a name and brand for this new found campaign project. I loved working with merchandise, and I believe that this is an area that hits home with a lot of people, for it is actually taken home, and typically not thrown away.

I hope to continue to research this subject and actually start paying attention to more of the evidence that comes out about global warming.

Testing

For trying out my ideas and concepts I tried to get feed back from multiple people are areas of interest. I have three college students, one who is a journalist, engineer, and education major. As well as an older gentleman working in adversing/sales and a high school student.

To show my pieces I displayed the ideas as a group and presented them with a list of questions as well as showed the poster so that they could compare. I did not interact with them until later, letting them decode everything on their own as if they were in the exhibit.

The following images are my prototypes and test materials.

2nd Annotation Sketches

For my second ideas I wanted to try these locations: bus, gas station, park, sidewalk, and stop lights/signs.

For the media I wanted to explore billboards, 3D prints/models, stickers and floor prints

3 Anotations

I have explored my three concepts/sketches, and after working on them, I found out that I no longer want to pursue the video/gif, and instead, I have decided to work on a more interactive piece. After talking with Tyler, I realized that I have stayed too restricted with the physical form I am creating, and I want to focus more on a 3D model. Bellow are my app design, poster sketch, and my new 3D model, still in 2D form.

My app is going much smoother than expected as the layout is a continuos image that scrolls. I am trying to keep the colors simple, using pull colors from the original poster.

Here is an example of my new 3D model. Imagine that the ice bergs are pieces that are able to be pulled out of the top and have information on the back of them regarding global warming. I like this idea, but my worry is that the piece will not be as interactive as I am hoping and that it will not hold enough information.

Here is a mock-up of my sketch poster. I really wanted to try and make it different from the actual poster for it is meant to be a stand alone. The only thing that is really bothering me is the fact it is so rough, so different. At the same time, I enjoy how the white is such a contrast from the poster, making your eye draw to the text.

D4U 3.4

I have three basic ideas that center around my three bullet points/sentences. The following photos show how I wish to use an app, gift and a poster to rely more information regarding Global Warming

For the app, I want it to be one long page that people can scroll down. There will be vector images similar to the original poster.

For the gift, I wanted to focus more on black and white elements and typography. Using fonts such as Rockwell and Whitney.

For the smaller poster, I wanted it to be hand drawn with some layered type and minimal images.

D4U 3.4

Global Warming

Global warming has been the source to many forms of activism. Sparking concern even before the turn of the century, solar and wind power are but two advancements that have grown out concern for human waist. “Global Warming,” an advocacy poster created by Leo Lin in 2009, specifically address rising sea levels, which are related to an increase in carbon dioxide.[1] With temperatures heating up, and northern glaciers melting, low-lying shores and islands may one day be submerged under water as the sea levels rise.[2] A striking illustration of a generalized human being struggles to take in air as they stand in water. Acting as both the individual’s face and an island, Leo plays on the human nature to survive in grave circumstances.

Greenhouse gases are marked as the main cause to global warming. Before 1950 the carbon dioxide level never rose above 300 parts per million. As of 2014, we now are seeing levels of up to 400 parts per million.[3] In the last century alone the global sea level has risen around 6.7 inches, double the rate of what it rose in the past century. This is in part due to the rise in temperatures, which are warming oceans and retreating glaciers.[4] Not only are our oceans threatening our way of life, but record-breaking extreme weather events have become much more common as researched by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). In 2012 there were 3,527 monthly weather records broken for heat, rain and snow in the United states, just about three hundred more a month than in 2011.[5]

By setting limits on global warming pollution and investing in green jobs and clean energy the human race can help slow down these effects. NOAA and Leo Lin’s advocacy poster are both trying to help influence the human race to pay more attention to their waist contribution. The more people understand the effects our actions have on our planets heath, the longer we will be able to enjoy her beauty. Leo emotionally speaks to our fears and feelings while NOAA tries to inform our intellect through facts and figures. By going to their websites, researching the meaning behind posters such as Leo’s, and updating yourself regularly on climate monitoring and research, the closer we all will be to helping our mother, Earth.[6]
